We are excited to announce that KitSplit has acquired Free Music Archive (FMA)! For those of you who haven’t heard of FMA, it’s a community of creators and a library of high-quality free music. The collection includes over 128,000 curated songs.
At KitSplit, our mission is to enable storytellers with accessible, affordable, and easy-to-use tools. Bringing FMA into the KitSplit family is a huge leap towards providing even more resources to the creative community.
We are thrilled to welcome FMA’s 10 million users to KitSplit. KitSplit will ensure FMA users continue to get high quality free music—and now they will have access to the best camera rentals on the planet, too! For our existing rental users, the FMA acquisition means an even larger, more valuable community, plus easier access to the world’s best collection of curated free music.
Since FMA started in 2009, it has been an incredible resource for free music for filmmakers, videographers, and creatives of all stripes. More than 20k artists have uploaded over 128k curated songs, which have been downloaded millions of times. FMA began as a project directed by the legendary Jersey City radio station WFMU. From the beginning, it served as a platform for collaboration between curators and artists. Inspired by Creative Commons and the open source software movement, the FMA provides a legal and technological framework to harness the potential of music sharing. Filmmakers + videographers have always been a core part of the FMA community.
Many of us at KitSplit have used and admired FMA over the years. At heart, our missions are aligned: supporting artists, tapping the power of the community, and fostering a more vibrant creative culture.
What’s Next for the Free Music Archive + KitSplit?
KitSplit is dedicated to empowering creators, and we’re excited to add free music to the tools we provide. FMA will stay up and running as is, and together we’ll be able to serve creators and our community even more powerfully.
Teaming up with FMA, KitSplit is working towards a world where any creator can pursue their vision and tell their story, regardless of budget, background, or location. We’ll continue to be guided by our mission to empower creators and help them bring their projects to life. To the FMA community: welcome to the KitSplit family!
