Pond5 is a stock media marketplace where people can buy and sell licenses to all kinds of videography, sound effects, music, and more. It was started by Tom Bennett, who wanted to start a more “vibrant, artist friendly marketplace” for stock assets. Pond5 allows artists to sell their own work as stock assets, choose the price , and make 50% of the price they set.
Currently, Pond5 has an impressive global network of about 98,000 artists around the world, with over 7.2 million clips in their collection. Robert Pascale, Pond5’s Director of Artist Development & Experience, talked to us about how they’re changing the game for editors and filmmakers. “What I think makes Pond5 stand out is that we have so many artists globally that we have acquired a variety of content from every corner of the globe. Some of that content is really popular, and some of it is very obscure and unusual,” says Pascale.
Putting your footage to work
So how do people make money on Pond5—and how much do they earn? There’s a broad range: “We have filmmakers that are earning as much as $15-20K a month, and some that are making a couple of hundred dollars a month. There are folks that have made selling their art on Pond5 a full time career and there are other folks who are using it as supplemental income,” Robert says. “The best commute is the one from your door to the mailbox!” Some filmmakers and photographers create footage specifically to sell on Pond5, but many start with footage they’ve already shot and own the rights to. It can be a great way to supplement other forms of income.
Pond5’s experts help artists figure out the best way to sell their footage and photos:“artists can change their prices on the fly if they think that they should be charging less or more for their work. We’ll even give advice on price based on what we know about the current market for their footage,” Pascale tells us. Pond5 even knows what kinds of footage is in hottest demand; he market is always changing and their experts are constantly tracking the trends.
Post production on a budget
On the editing side of things, Pond5 is determined to save you some money and give you the best selection of media they can. “Pricing on average is lower than most of the other options out there right now. For editors, that’s important because they can pass those saving off to their clients,” Pascale explains.
He adds, “What I think makes Pond5 stand out is that we have so many artists globally that we have acquired a variety of content from every corner of the globe, including some very “ obscure and unusual footage.
